FIRST GRADE
Students read Matisse's Garden by Samantha Friedman and illustrated by Cristina Amodeo. The picture book includes reproductions of artworks by Henri Matisse. Students painted paper like Henri Matisse and will make cut outs like the artist and will be creating their own gardens.
Laying Tiles
Students dialogued about mosaics (tiny tiles or stain glass). They created their own tile using 4 tiles in 4 rows. "How many tiles are there in total?" One student's response, "There are 16 tiles, because 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16. I know how to count by fours." Soon grout will be added to the tile mold.

I Love Color
First and Second grade students made color wheels earlier this year by using only the Primary Colors. Primary Colors cannot be made from other colors and they make all of the other colors. First Grade students mixed Primary Colors to create Secondary Colors. Second Grade students not only mixed Primary Colors to create Secondary Colors, but they learned how to mix Tertiary Colors (the in between colors).

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
Students have been reading Charlotte's Web in the classroom. In Art, students investigated the Art Element of Line by drawing glue lines to create spider webs. The webs were then sprinkled with glitter. Last week students hand printed spiders. Students will further study the Art Element of Line by creating skeletons with Q-tips.
