Embracing the DAOW: Digital, Art, Oral, and Written
Cultural Literacy
"Literacy is far more than a skill and it requires large amounts of specific information . . . (a) network of information that all competent readers possess."--E.D. Hirsh
“When every student in the country reads Romeo and Juliet, it means that we all acquire a shared cultural literacy, a sharing that is fundamental if we, as a culture, are going to be able to communicate with one another.”--Kelly Gallagher
Coupled with E.D. Hirsh's concept of cultural literacy, a belief that shared knowledge and common stories should be passed on throughout generations, our philosophy and practice follows the work of Dr. Jason Ohler, the author of the DAOW of literacy, incorporating digital, art, oral, and written work. Our passion for the written word, history, and collaboration is celebrated in the organization and implementation of James Morris School's annual literacy theme.

Muhammad Ali's 80th Birthday and Literacy
Felix Manuel Rodriguez, author of Dad, Me, and Muhammad Ali shared his book and life experiences with students at James Morris School before and during Literacy Night. A Waterbury native and product of being raised by only his mother, Mr. Rodriquez was determined to succeed in life. Ali was and still is Felix Manuel Rodriguez's role model.
At the right, student work is proudly displayed at JMS.
